In all the cases I have seen, however, activity diagrams haveto be extended because they lack the precision or constraints required by theseworkflow engines. I have encountered some systems that generatebusiness-process descriptions from activity diagrams, and use them to feedworkflow engines. I don't know any tools that generate source code directly from activitydiagrams, or vice-versa. More-complicated activity diagrams include decision diamonds with guardconditions, iteration markers, signals, and objects that are inputs and outputsof the activities. Figure 2 shows a rather trivialactivity diagram that describes the check-out process at a basic supermarket.Swimlanes show who is responsible for which activities, and synch bars showforks and joins that enable activities to be performed concurrentlyor atleast in no particular sequence. Activity diagrams can be used todescribe business processes, sequences of user interactions (use cases), or theimplementation of a particular operation. As a result, activity diagrams have been thesubject of great debate in the UML world. Tomost people, activity diagrams represent little more than a sophisticatedversion of traditional flowcharts. Building Web Applications with UML, 2nd EditionĪccording to the UML specification 4, UML activity diagrams are aspecial case of a state machine in which each state represents an ongoingactivity, and transitions to the next state occurs when activities complete.
